Атласи: мотиви їх створення та перші концепції

Атласна картографія ХХІ ст. втрачає свій «флагманський» статус. Паперові атласи стали менш привабливими в добу інформаційного суспільства. Водночас електронні атласи або програють конкуренцію іншим картографічним застосункам, або розчиняються серед них, не маючи власних унікальних рис. У пошуках ідей та смислів для нових концепцій електронних атласів, ми звернулися до історії виникнення перших атласів, аби зрозуміти їх сутність, мотиви створення та чинники успіху. В цій статті на основі сучасних робіт істориків картографії та географів, уточнено такі питання: про походження поняття «атлас» і про перше його використання для означення «зібрання карт»; про перший в сучасному розумінні атлас; про зміст концепцій атласів А. Ортелія і Г. Меркатора.
