To the reader

The formation and development of geographical science in the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine has a problematic history. During the Academy of Sciences' operation, established on November 24, 1918, by the “Law of the Ukrainian State on the Establishment of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kyiv,” signed by Hetman Pavlo Skoropadskyi, traces of geographical exploration can be found in the works of many scientists. However, the complex process of forming academic institutions was relatively slow. Ancient science geography, the roots of which lie in the writings of scientists and philosophers of Ancient Greece and Rome, had a long enough period for its recognition.
The first official mention of the need to create a special scientific center based on the Institute of Geography of Kyiv State University named after T. G. Shevchenko was found in the appeal of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR to the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR in 1951*. The appeal contains a draft structure of the Institute of Geography, staffing, and a proposal for the provision of premises. The question of establishing a geographical institution was delayed, but the need for support across various sectors of the economy became more acute regarding scientific development funded by state resources. On March 3, 1964, The Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR adopted a resolution “On the development of geography research at the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR” (No. 45). In organizational terms, the Geography Sector was created at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, headed by Doctor of Economic Sciences N. N. Palamarchuk. On November 13, 1991, the Department of Geography was established within the Institute of Geography. The first director was appointed, Doctor of Geographical Sciences L. G. Rudenko.
Over the years of the institution's existence, many famous geographers have worked there. New scientific directions for significant results were formed. All this was done successfully. They were recognized and highly appreciated by the state.
The magazine's editorial board invites readers to become acquainted with the main results of geographers over the years.
